Anxiety and worry are emotions that everyone feels at times, and it can act as a protective measure when we are faced with potential danger or unfamiliar situations. For example, most people have some level of anxiety when a big project is due in school or at work, before making an important decision, or when health or financial issues arise. In many cases, anxiety may even be helpful, as it can tell us when something is wrong or needs to be changed. Feeling anxious about diving off that cliff into the water below? This anxiety allows you to take a step back and analyze the situation. Is it safe or unsafe? Is the water too shallow? What can you do to make it safer? This is how anxiety can work as a protective measure.
Unfortunately, anxiety can sometimes be disproportionate to the actual problem, or may exist when there’s no real threat at all, which can end up being debilitating. This can be an indication that you’re experiencing an anxiety disorder.
Common symptoms of an anxiety disorder include panic, fear, shortness of breath, breathing faster, heart palpitations, obsessive thoughts, insomnia, and feelings of doom or danger. This list is not exhaustive, and the fact that you experience some of these symptoms does not automatically mean you have an anxiety disorder. However, if you’re experiencing any of the symptoms listed above and it’s impacting your ability to function on a day-to-day basis, treatment should be considered.
