Biofeedback Counseling

You may have heard of Biofeedback before, but you do not know exactly what it is or how it can be used in Biofeedback Counseling. Here, we’ll provide a brief overview of Biofeedback and how it can be beneficial for those who are struggling with anxiety, stress, or other mental health issues.

It is a type of Biofeedback Therapy that uses feedback from various sensors to help patients learn to control their bodies autonomic nervous system. This system controls things like heart rate and blood pressure. By seeing real-time feedback on their bodily functions, patients can learn to control them more effectively.

Biofeedback Therapy is a powerful method of relaxation and self-awareness that has been used effectively for decades to manage stress, improve sleep quality, regulate blood pressure, manage pain and discomfort, cure migraines and headaches, lower blood pressure, reduce panic attacks and other anxiety symptoms, manage chronic pain from fibromyalgia or arthritis, and manage chronic headaches, such as migraine headaches or cluster headaches.

How Biofeedback Works

Many people hear the words Biofeedback and sensors and might be worried about what this really entails. It’s important to understand how it works and that it’s safe and not at all invasive.

Heart rate variability (HRV) Biofeedback is one of the most common types of Biofeedback used today. It measures the time interval between each heartbeat. During HRV Biofeedback, sensors are placed on the patient’s chest and hooked up to a computer. The computer then displays the patient’s heart rate in real time. The Biofeedback Therapist will help the patient interpret the feedback so that they can begin to understand how their emotions are affecting their bodily functions. From there, patients can learn techniques to control their heart rate and manage their stress more effectively.

What to Expect in a Session

Biofeedback Counseling sessions usually last around 30-60 minutes. During the session, you will be asked to do various activities while monitoring your heart rate feedback on the computer screen. The therapist may also ask you to do some breathing exercises to help you relax. Once you have learned how to control your heart rate through relaxation techniques, you will be able to practice these techniques at home or in any stressful situation.

Combine Biofeedback With Talk Therapy

Biofeedback Therapy is typically combined with more traditional therapeutic techniques as well as talk therapy in order to help clients heal from trauma and other issues that may be affecting their mental health. Learning how your body reacts to stressors and how to control your reactions will be immensely helpful, but it’s important to understand some of the underlying issues as well.
